Undergraduate Student Research Opportunities
(posted April 2005)

The Laser Plasma and Laser-Matter Interactions group in the UCSD Center for Energy Research has opportunities for undergraduate students in research programs focused on inertial fusion science and related applications. Our work includes experimental and theoretical studies of:

  • Material response to pulsed lasers below the ablation threshold
  • Laser ablation plume dynamics
  • Laser plasma light sources, including EUV and XUV applications
  • High energy density physics

Student projects relate to either experimental or computational aspects of this work, assisting in data collection and analysis, or building and testing specialized instruments. Students with skills in general laboratory work, C++ and Matlab programming, imaging, optics, mechanical design, electronics, plasma physics or astrophysics are encouraged to apply. Please contact Dr. Mark Tillack [(858)534- 7897, mtillack@ucsd.edu, or Prof. Farrokh Najmabadi [(858)534-7869, fnajmabadi@ucsd.edu].
